Landscaping to Avoid Wildlife Conflicts

Wild animals contribute to our enjoyment of nature, and many species add value to urban and suburban environments. Landscapes are frequently developed to be "environmentally friendly" by providing food and cover for songbirds, waterfowl, squirrels, and other wildlife. Wild animals can, however, damage property or threaten human health and safety. The presence of undesirable species or animal overpopulation often leads to many common wildlife problems associated with urban landscapes.

Increasing the Profitability of Florida Alligator Carcasses

The American alligator, Alligator mississippiensis, is thought by many to be one of Florida's true natives. This native Floridian has been prized over the years for its commercially valuable skin. In the past, this has unfortunately led to widespread, abusive harvesting of wild alligators that nearly led to their extinction. However, today under strict federal and state scrutiny, the wild alligator is making a strong comeback. Also, today we are witnessing the increase in numbers of "farm-raised" alligators. Unlike their wild counterparts, these animals are raised under controlled conditions and "harvested" for their valuable skin and for their meat. The farm-raised alligator industry is rapidly growing and the amount of alligator meat available for sale to the public is also growing. Unfortunately, we currently have little information regarding all aspects of alligator processing and the characteristics of the meat itself. Therefore, this study was designed to develop information regarding this subject using the following objectives: 1. To determine the percentages of hide, useable lean meat, fat, and waste of a 6 to 6½ foot gator carcass. 2. To determine the composition of alligator fat and to explore the possible uses of this fat. 3. To develop uses for or products to be made from the residual lean tissue currently being left on alligator carcasses after processing.

Using Rotenone To Renovate Fish Populations In Farm Ponds

The ultimate fate of many farm ponds in Mississippi is an unbalanced fish population that is undesirable to fishermen, and, therefore, has little recreational fishing value. Once a fish population reaches such a condition, the best alternative is usually to eliminate the resident fish completely and to restock with a desirable combination of fish at recommended rates.

Fertilizing Trees and Shrubs

In urban or suburban neighborhoods, trees and shrubs often need fertilizing. Modern home- building methods create adverse growing conditions for plants. Often, good topsoil is completely removed and not replaced. Heavy machinery scrapes and compacts fertile soil, reducing its aeration and drainage. Plants are crowded by streets and sidewalks, and must compete with grass for nutrients. Proper fertilization is especially important to landscape plants in this type of environment.

Alaska Community Forestry Program

A community or urban forest is all the trees growing in and around a city, town, or village. It includes trees in parks, school yards, home landscapes, utility rights-of-way, vacant lots, greenbelts and along stream banks. Shrubs, ground covers, soil, wildlife, and water bodies are also part of the urban forest. Streets, buildings, utilities, parking lots, and, most importantly, people, are an integral part of the urban ecosystem.

Crown Shape Factors & Volumes

Added: October 31, 2008

Many of the models for determining loads and forces in tree structural systems depend upon crown shape. Tree crown shapes are integral to a variety of models because volume estimates, surface area estimates, or various types of two dimensional crown projections are directly related to crown shape. Calculating crown shape in a natural setting under dynamic loads requires continuous changes (over a variety of time and spacial scales) with growth, damage, and applied forces.
