Growing Christmas Trees on Reclaimed Surface-Mined Land

Christmas tree production can be an excellent use for reclaimed mined lands in Virginia. Most species do quite well on mine soils because they are more tolerant of the acid, infertile, and droughty conditions than agricultural or horticultural crops, yet they do respond to active management.

Fertilizing Trees and Shrubs

In urban or suburban neighborhoods, trees and shrubs often need fertilizing. Modern home- building methods create adverse growing conditions for plants. Often, good topsoil is completely removed and not replaced. Heavy machinery scrapes and compacts fertile soil, reducing its aeration and drainage. Plants are crowded by streets and sidewalks, and must compete with grass for nutrients. Proper fertilization is especially important to landscape plants in this type of environment.

Ecological and Economic Consequences of the 1998 Florida Wildfires

The objective of this project was to assess the economic effects of catastrophic forest wildfires in Florida and various causal factors contributing to these fires, principal among them the use of prescribed burning. We used static and dynamic analyses at several spatial and temporal scales drawing on a combination of operational, survey and other data sources. One analysis estimated the economic effects of the 1998 wildfires in northeastern Florida, proximally caused by an unusually dangerous weather pattern associated with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle.
