Growth Increment Area Increase
Hits: 1 Added: October 31, 2008
Rating: 2.75 Votes: 36 Rate It

The secondary growth of trees produces unique mechanical and biological solutions to life. From shoot tip to root tip, a new growth increment is deposited on the outside of the last growth increment. This livingsheath of tissue generated (facilitated) by the last growth increment, minimizes transport resistances and pathway defense, as well as spreading out bending, twisting and gravitational loads. As new growth increments generate, some of the most interior increments are internally shed and closed-down. The geometric result is a nearly round in cross-section, longitudinally tapered, nested set of conical shaped growth increment layers.

Estimating Weights of Branch Segments
Hits: 1 Added: October 31, 2008
Rating: 2.45945945946 Votes: 37 Rate It

Estimating the forces and loads applied in tree systems requires the weight of different parts and portions be determined. One of the most difficult measures to estimate is green xylem weight in branches. Wood weight can be precisely and accurately determined in the laboratory from small samples at oven-dry moisture contents. Within living trees, moisture content values are difficult to determine accurately. The moisture contents of living tree xylem and associated tissue can vary between 30% and 250% as compared with the weight of any associatedwoody material.

Crown Shape Factors & Volumes
Hits: 1 Added: October 31, 2008
Rating: 2.59375 Votes: 32 Rate It

Many of the models for determining loads and forces in tree structural systems depend upon crown shape. Tree crown shapes are integral to a variety of models because volume estimates, surface area estimates, or various types of two dimensional crown projections are directly related to crown shape. Calculating crown shape in a natural setting under dynamic loads requires continuous changes (over a variety of time and spacial scales) with growth, damage, and applied forces.

Critical Force for Buckling Tree Stems

Tree strength and stiffness can resist significant forces and not fail. A large proportion of this strength lies with the thickness (diameter) of the stem. Stem buckling occurs when an exerted force begins and continues to bend the stem beyond recovery.

Control of Nitrogen Levels in Trees

From an energy standpoint, uptake and reduction of nitrates with incorporation into an organic framework is one of the most expensive tasks a tree performs. It would hardly be worthwhile if useable nitrogen in the environment was not at a premium.

Allelopathy in trees and forests is an important health care issue. Allelopathy is the chemical modification of the site by an individual to enhance interference effectiveness. Allelopathy also involves the ecological communications between species which can positively or negatively influence growth, behavior, reproduction, and survival of associated species.

Alaska Community Forestry Program

A community or urban forest is all the trees growing in and around a city, town, or village. It includes trees in parks, school yards, home landscapes, utility rights-of-way, vacant lots, greenbelts and along stream banks. Shrubs, ground covers, soil, wildlife, and water bodies are also part of the urban forest. Streets, buildings, utilities, parking lots, and, most importantly, people, are an integral part of the urban ecosystem.

Tree-ring Porosity Forms in Hardwoods

One growth increment of a tree, commonly called a “growth ring,” is composed of structural, conducting, and defensive components. In a cross-section, the largest conducting vessels can be visible to the unaided eye or can be minutely small. Due to shoot growth rates and timing, and leaf expansion periods, different growth conditions affect vessel size and xylem composition.

"Continued population growth and the assumed expansion of the United States economy will impact heavily on the forest resources of the United States. Additionally, changes in social values and attitudes are increasing the demand on the forest resources to produce a variety of goods and services. Such demands are shifting harvesting pressure from western to eastern forests." (Rosson, 1995). Forestry in the state of Georgia is reported as the number one manufacturing industry in the state in employment, output, and value added. The purpose of this presentation is to explore issues related to timber product output, forest land resources, ownership, employment, output, value added, and other forestry resource related issues in Georgia. Also, comparisons are made with other agricultural crops in Georgia and in the region.

Getting trees started correctly in your yard, along streets or in a park is critical to long tree life, easy care and low-cost maintenance. One way to ensure trees are planted correctly is to give them plenty of room to grow. Fruit trees, trees in landscape beds and specimen ornamental trees are grown for different reasons and are not planted the same way as shade and street trees. Here, we deal with shade and street tree planting.

Osage-orange (Maclura pomifera) is a small tree in which people have found great value. Once discovered by early European settlers, it was carried and tended across the continent. Because of its attributes, it was prized anywhere agriculture and grazing animals were found. It is now considered escaped from cultivation and has naturalized in many areas. Solitary trees or small family groups can be found on old home sites, in alleys, and along roadways.
