Many of South Carolina's forest lands are being converted to non-forest uses. In March 1999 the governor of South Carolina appointed the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) as the state lead agency to develop and administer a Forest Legacy Program in South Carolina. The purpose of the Forest Legacy Program (FLP) is to identify and protect environmentally important forest land from conversion to non-forest uses, through the use of conservation easements and fee purchases.
